CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Entering the Home Stretch on Canopy

Canopy at Mill District achieved a major milestone last month, with all three buildings officially completing all work related to concrete and steel.

This means subcontracting work on the three buildings will shift to exterior & interior framing, drywall, windows, and doors. According to Doug Harrington, director of design and construction for Mill District, it also means the project now enters another phase entirely.

“We’re out of the concrete and steel stage,” Doug said last week. “After basically a year of working with subcontractors on these critical structural components, Canopy as a whole is moving into the next phase.”

Building C—the southernmost building of the trio—is the farthest along with window and door installation almost complete. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing “rough in” is scheduled to wrap up by the end of the month.

Doug explained that in construction circles, this process is known as “closing in” a building. He added that as subcontractors progress with these tasks on Building C, they will then move to Building B and finally to Building A.

Meanwhile interior & exterior framing is continuing in Building B. Doug noted that the framing subcontractor, a Sonoma-based company named North County Drywall, is completing work ahead of schedule—a situation that could potentially speed things up for other trades working in that building.

“Moving quickly is a good problem to have,” he joked.
