At Mill District, a purposeful and long-term approach to sustainability is central to everything we do.
We are building 208 new residences on the site of the former Nu Forest Products lumber mill, repurposing a historic industrial part of downtown Healdsburg to create a vibrant new residential neighborhood for the future. Though our first move-ins aren’t anticipated until we complete our community housing project in fall 2022, we are committed to minimizing our impact on the city, the environment, and surrounding region every day. Furthermore, our actions are consistent with the Central Healdsburg Avenue Plan that was supported by citizens and was the result of a 5-year planning process.
In anticipation of drought conditions across California, Mill District has taken significant steps to address water conservation and be water wise. Specifically, we have:
*Embraced high-density, multifamily vertical construction, which uses significantly less water than the single-family homes that dominate the Healdsburg market today.
*Incorporated low-flow fixtures and appliances into all in-home designs; these faucets, shower heads, and toilets use up to 60 percent less water than older options.
*Where possible, we are incorporating drought-tolerant plants, native plant materials, and plants that have adapted to the local climate.
*All landscaped areas at Mill District will utilize irrigation systems with weather sync technology; controlling the irrigation system based on the season, temperature, rain, and soil moisture.
*Leveraged recycled concrete beneath what will become our publicly accessible park to naturally filter rainwater and runoff; this makeshift catchment will hold the water long enough for our ring of old-growth redwoods to “drink.”
*Invested in a sidewalk that sits atop state-of-the-art basins that collect water for trees; once complete, this will be one of the largest private subsurface water retention systems in California.
*Built a mainline hookup for Healdsburg’s “Purple Pipe” program, which will divert excess grey water.
Healdsburg bills itself as a world-class, innovative small town, and we intend to do our part to keep it that way.
